As of December 31, 2025, a total of 54 cities across 31 provincial-level regions in China, including the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, were operating urban rail transit systems.
These systems comprised 343 lines with a combined operating length of 11,710.3 kilometers and 6,680 stations.
During 2025, 18 new urban rail transit lines and 32 new operating sections were put into service, adding a total of 764.7 kilometers to the network.
In terms of operations, urban rail systems ran a total of 44.31 million train services throughout the year, carrying 33.24 billion passenger trips. Total station entries reached 19.80 billion, while passenger-kilometers amounted to 278.08 billion. Annual ridership increased by 1.0 billion passenger trips compared with 2024, representing a year-on-year growth of 3.1%.

By system type:

l  Metro and Light Rail

Metro and light rail services were in operation in 43 cities, covering 282 lines with a total length of 10,142.3 kilometers. These systems carried 32.13 billion passenger trips, with 19.02 billion station entries.
l  Monorail, Maglev, and Suburban Rapid Transit

A total of 26 lines were operated in 17 cities, with an operating length of 1,011.3 kilometers. Annual ridership reached 990 million passenger trips, and station entries totaled 660 million.

l  Tram and Automated Guided Transit (AGT)

Tram and AGT systems operated in 19 cities, comprising 35 lines with a total length of 556.7 kilometers. These systems recorded 120 million passenger trips and the same number of station entries.

Additional breakdown data show that:

 l  275 metro and light rail lines in 43 cities operated a combined length of 9,898.5 kilometers, carrying 2.73 billion passenger trips with 1.61 billion station entries;

 l  25 monorail, maglev, and suburban rapid transit lines in 16 cities operated 970.7 kilometers, carrying 82.83 million passenger trips with 55.97 million station entries;

 l 34 tram and AGT lines in 18 cities operated 520.5 kilometers, carrying 11.37 million passenger trips with 16.42 million station entries.
